Santa comes but once a year, and so too do Lawrence’s Christmas light shows and displays. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, the entire city gets a festive makeover, with thousands if not millions of holiday lights shining their shine for all the townsfolk to see. So remote-start your Nissan Rogue, blast the heat, and take a drive to see some of the best Christmas lights in Lawrence, Kansas.
1141 Massachusetts Street
Times: Daily until 11:30 PM
In traditional fashion, the South Park Christmas Tree lights go up around Thanksgiving and come down after New Year’s. Park near the courthouse and take a stroll around South Park to view the various holiday decorations. Every Christmas, the park is aglow with dazzling lights, snowmen, and other fun features that can only be seen if you’re a-walkin’. Click for directions.
Pro Tip: It’s a beautiful sight if you want to forego the usual drive-through holiday lights display. But don’t forget to take a self-driving tour on Massachusetts Street, between 6th and 12th Street, to view the other Christmas lights and displays. Nearly 300 trees are decorated throughout the downtown area.
1132 Parkside Circle
Times: Weekdays – 5:15 to 10 PM | Weekends and Holidays: 5:15 to 11 PM
Since 2008, Gary and Mary (perfect!) Martin’s Parkside Circle home has been the best place to see Christmas lights in Lawrence, KS. We’d bet 2019 will be no different. Known to locals as the Parkside Christmas Light Show, the Martin house is decorated from slab to chimney by Thanksgiving. Their animated Christmas lights show, which typically runs for 15-20 minutes, is synced to holiday classics on 96.9 FM, so turn the volume up. Click for directions.
Pro Tip: Approach from the south (from Tiffany Drive and Parkside Road) for a shorter wait in line. It can become quite busy, so expect to spend the evening in your SUV, mug o’ cocoa in hand.
4612 Woodridge Drive
After a devastating fire in 2017, the Woodridge neighborhood replaced the entirety of its multi-house Christmas light display. Visitors are now greeted with soft, white lights that extend from roof to roof, tree to tree, gutter to gutter. It’s modern elegance in true holiday fashion. Click for directions.
Pro Tip: Take lots of pictures. That’s our tip.
2920 Pebble Lane
For nearly a decade, the Howe Family Christmas light display in Lawrence has been a hit. It’s incredibly detailed, has tons of lights—the tree in the front yard houses over 5,000 alone—and each year’s display is themed. Lee Howe, the mastermind behind the Holiday show, is also an avid Halloween decorator. Visit his home next October for some spooky sights. Click for directions.
132 Bramble Bend Court
Dates: November 28, 2019 – January 1, 2020
Times: Weekdays – 5 to 10 PM | Weekends and Holidays: 5 to 11 PM
Beginning on Thanksgiving evening, Santa’s Lights go on full display at this Bramble Bend Court Christmas spectacle. It’s one of the most popular Lawrence holiday light shows for a reason—thousands of them, to be exact. In November, the Fisher family begins decorating their home with hundreds of thousands of Christmas lights. Once they’re all connected, the Fishers begin programming their display, synchronizing the lights to music from 96.7 FM. Topping it off is Santa Claus in the window. Click for directions.
Pro Tip: If you have a truck like the Nissan Titan, and the evening isn’t bone-chillingly frigid, consider setting up a watch party in the truck bed. The view can be obscured by passing vehicles, so any height advantage you can get, take it.
3405 Westridge Court
Large candy cane displays, icicle string lights, and several snowmen line the home on Westridge. For a quaint little night of Christmas light-viewing, Westridge is the place to be. The entire cul-de-sac usually participates in holiday decorations, so don’t forget to take that slow trek around the half-block of Westridge. Click for directions.
1305 Vantuyl Drive
Impressive yet delicately designed, the Christmas lights on this Lawrence home are book-ended by several other nice holiday displays. But this is the “Primetime TV” house; lights usually run until 11 PM or later and flash to recorded holiday tunes. Click for directions.
